A couple of videos to start reflecting upon ICT.

These two monks are in a Medieval monastery. One of them has asked a helpdesk because he cannot understand how the book works. This technological advance is far beyond his limits!

How is this situation similar to yours?

Do you feel like the monk? Has your attitude towards technologies changed? Is it changing? Will it ever change ?

How is a book similar to /better than/different from a computer?

  1. Absolutely, I do feel like the monk when software don't work as expected and error messages keep popping up O.o

A paperback doesn't have all those 'useful' features a netbook has. That's a fact. However, a book can fire your imagination anywhere, anytime, even if there's a power cut... ;-)

  2. HA, HA. A book never gives you back an ERROR 404!, You're right!
There's another video, i see if I can find it that describes the books as: "not contamminating gadget, portable device, never catches viruses,no batteries needed, etc, etc. Does anybody have it?

    Where should the equilibrium fit?

  3. I suppose we should take the best of both worlds, shouldn't we?

  4. Now, the serious stuff, I think the role of ICT in education is not to replace the paperback, but to support its use at school. Teachers can find relevant ways of exploiting both.

I’ve got the impression this is the same phenomenon that happened when television was said to replace the radio and then the Internet was said to replace television…

  5. Actually it seems to be a mattero of ADDING and not REPLACING, doesn't it? The key point is HOW and WHY!

  7. To be honest, we feel like the monk right now because we are trying to create our blog and we found it a little difficult.
We are not digital natives like our students are due to the fact that we were born in a less digitalized world.
We consider that new technologies are very important nowadays and should be integrated in our lives but there must be an equilibrium between traditional resources such as books and the new ones.
